Kochi: Dialysis has been performed on a newborn of only 32 days old. This risky procedure was performed by Dr.Rajiv and his team at
Ernakulum Kaloor PVS Hospital.
The baby was born to parents of vadakkan Paravoor. The mother was admitted to the hospital for an immediate caesarean session.
Since the premature baby was found to have difficulty in respiration as well as heart trouble, it was put in the ventilator. Peritoneal
dialysis was performed as there as difficulty in passage of urine and high blood pressure. Dr, P.K. Rajiv, Dr. Tony Mambilli, paediatric
surgeon Dr. Mohan Abraham etc., lead this treatment. Dr.Rajiv said that it is very rare that peritoneal dialysis is performed in
newborns, usually it is impossible to perform this procedure in premature babies. The baby was only 1.5kgs. Dr. Rajiv says that high
class level three care system has been installed at PVS Hospital. After the dialysis, the baby is in a stable condition and has passed 11 ml
urine, which can be considered a good sign, says Dr. Rajiv.
