Nothing will happen to this little on

prematurely born, weighed below 1kg, heart, liver, lungs, eyes etc., in a serious condition experience of saving such a baby

This baby left the comfort of mothers womb into a world filled with many pains.

congenital heart disorder one on side and serious infection of the blood on the other.pneumonia of the lungs and working of the liver
topsyturvy.

since birth, the baby has remained in the ventilator most of the time.

'prematurely born, weighed below 1kg,heart,liver,lungs,eyes etc in a serious condition. Thank God, it was possible to save such a kid'
says Dr.Rajiv, Neonatology department head of Amrutha Institute of Medical sciences.

Gauri Ben, wife of Shailesh M. Patel, had given birth to quadruplets, of which two of them died during birth.one male baby remained
healthy. It was the 4th one who had these serious disorders.

The baby was treated at Baroda and some other hospitals In Ahmadabad for two months. The baby remained most of the time in the
ventilator due to pneumonia of the lungs. Atlast, on April 14th,with the aid of artificial respirator by a doctor, Shailesh flown the baby
from Mumbai to Kochi for better treatment.

The kid was slipping towards death when he was brought here, says Dr.Rajiv so had to be modern child ICU facility for the first 4 day.
Dr.Rajiv recalls.

Doctors first trial was to reduce the septicaemia of the blood. This had lead to the improper functioning of the liver. lungs had
contracted pneumonia. When echocardiography was taken, P.D.A (the condition in which the impure blood and pureblood gets mixed up due to
incompatibility of the valves) of the heart was found out.

That should be cured. But that could be treated only after the condition of the baby became stable.

MAIN PROBLEM WAS SEPTICAEMIA OF THE BLOOD

The blood infection called septicaemia, had lead to the serious condition of the baby. this condition was the most risky factor
regarding treatment. Since pseudomonas virus had entered the blood, the working of liver, lungs etc. had problems.

Due to septicaemia of the blood, most antibiotics did not take into effect, and finally a very strong antibiotic had to be used which
subsequently re-corrected about 80 % of liver function. Also the blood had to be completely changed and substituted with new blood and
finally the baby came out of the risky phase and his condition began to improve.

On the 4th day when the condition began to improve, Dr. Krishna Kumar performed a surgery to close the hole present in the heart.

Even the ventilator gave pains premature baby, underdeveloped lungs, the treatment in ventilator in various hospital for more than 2
months would surely have brought pains to the baby's respiratory system.

There is a condition called ventilator attack and that might have happened. but finally it is the ventilator that saved the life. In
this case, special artificial respiratory technique for revival of newborns was used. Artificial respiration was given more frequently.
Bubbles continuous positive air way pressure was also given to expand the lungs otherwise tracheostomy surgery would have to be done to
the small kid to provide artificial respiration.

Premature babies usually suffer from complaints regarding vision. This condition is called retinopathy of prematurity, laser treatment
for this condition (laser photo coagulation)was given for this condition. During the initial stage of this treatment, the heartbeat of
the baby dangerously lessened so the treatment had to be stopped temporarily and continued after a few days when the condition became
stable and finally eye condition improved.

This baby received the most specialised and modern treatment available for newborns. There will never be any ill effect in future
regarding the treatment. C.T. scan showed that the brain had expanded about 90% and other developments will resume as in normal babies
according to the growth. Dr.Rajiv is optimistic about this hardest case he had ever handled.
