Kochi: Feb 16. Dialysis has been performed on a baby born prematurely at months of term.
This risky procedure of peritoneal dialysis was performed successfully at PVS Hospital Kochi. Dr.Rajiv, Medical Director of the
hospital says the press that this is the first time such a procedure was done in Kerala.
The baby was born with weak heart and kidney function. Peritoneal dialysis is performed by inducing dialysis fluid into the peritoneal
membrane (this membrane acts as the protective covering of internal organs). The baby weighing only 1.5kgs, had underwent dialysis along
with the aid of ventilator to provide artificial respiration, pulse oxymeter, infusions, etc.
Dr.Rajiv says that the procedure was possible since the brain of the newborn was in normal condition. Dr.Mani, Dr.Mohan Abraham also were
in the team along with Dr.Rajiv in performing this procedure.
