Kochi: Dialysis has been performed on a newborn of only 32 days old. This risky procedure was performed by Dr.Rajiv and his team at
Ernakulam Kaloor PVS Hospital.
Dr. Rajiv says that it is the first time that dialysis is performed successfully on a premature baby.
The mother had to undergo a quick caesarean procedure and the baby weighed only 1.5 kg and the baby was diagnosed with heart
complaints.
Baby was immediately shifted to the ventilator. Venoarterial exchange transfusion was performed to remove blockage of urine, but it
proved to be of no use due to which the doctors decided to try dialysis.
Dialysis was performed under the leadership of Dr.Rajiv by nephrologists Dr. Mani, paediatric surgeon Dr. Mohan Abraham etc., on the
seventh day of the birth of the baby. Dr.Rajiv says that the healthy condition of the kidneys prompted them to carry on with this risky
lifesaving procedure.
