Kochi: Ambulance for shifting newborns with serious disorders to far off specialist hospitals for better care has initiated for the
first time in south India at Amrita hospital Kochi.
Newborn of only 11 days old was shifted to a 120km far hospital for speciality treatment using this intricate and adventurous technique.
This feat was achieved by the neonatal care department of Amrutha hospitals under the leadership of Dr.Rajiv. This equipment was imported
from America. This ambulance modelled by Ford, has all the facilities to monitor the health of newborns.
Although foreign countries have best of road, doesn't carry a serious baby in a ambulance for more than 95kms.considering that it is
indeed a feat that 120kms were travelled neglecting the poor condition of our roads, Dr.Rajiv says.
The female baby, born prematurely to Sajeevan and Rajalakshmi of thiruvalla with birth weight of only 2kgs,had contracted pneumonia and
suffered from bleeding on the fifteenth day, so she was shifted to the ventilator.
Hearing about the serious condition of the baby,Dr.rajiv and his team including Dr.Ramkumar and nurse Reena,had reached thiruvalla along
with the ventilator ambulance and it was indeed an adventurous mission for them.
care was taken from the time the baby was taken into the ambulance,her heart beat,oxygen leveletc were carefully monitored,taking notice
of even minute changes.the ambulance had to be halted three times when they had doubt in the condition of the baby and properly
checked.They monitored her condition each second and toook the baby without any hindrance to Amrutha hospital,says Dr.Rajiv.
He stresses that presence of equipment alone is the important factor but confidenceis utmost importance.usually no one dares to experiment
sucha an adventure with a life since if any untoward happens they are answerable to numerous questions.It is at this juncture that he and
his team succeeded with help from the almighty.
Using this ambulance technique.kids in serious condition from Alappuzha,Trissur,Kottayam districts can avail this facility.hospital
authorities are in a trial to provide further services in kollam,palakkad districts also.
